President Trump recently proposed eliminating the Department of Education. While the agency cannot be shut down without approval from Congress, NBC Washington spoke to David Blazar, associate professor of education policy, about the impact this decision could have on students.

Blazar emphasized that federal funding from the department is carefully targeted to ensure that children who need it most, such as those in low-income areas and special education, have access to essential resources.

鈥淚f we send money to states in large block grants, states [will now] have a lot of discretion about how they might use that,鈥 Blazar explained.
